Week Ten at Harmarville
Week Ten
Day Sixty-four...
August 6, 2003
Good morning All....
The report this morning came from the sister on the scene, Heather. Hez
went in early yesterday and stayed all day. She hadn't seen Greg's therapy for
a while, so she could really see the progress. She was particularly impressed
with his ability to eat his lunch largely independently. He had a hotdog. He
has been able to eat them on his own for several weeks. The hotdog and the bun
fit perfectly into his cupped hand (imagine a C). French fries: Just 2 weeks
ago he couldn't eat them on his own. Yesterday, he was able to pick it up, dip
it in ketchup and eat it. Peaches: He had a little difficulty with the
built-up spoon. When he tried to angle it to cut and pick up the peaches, it
swiveled in his hand. So he put on the U-cuff, the OT slid the spoon in and he
was in business. Also, Heather said that at one point she went outside to talk
on the cellphone. She saw Greg come to the door, so she headed for the door to
let him out. He waved her off and managed to get the door open enough that he
could start the chair through it. Then, with the chair wedged in there, he
pushed the door again and got all the way through it.
I was looking through my Touch Point Bible for a scripture about
independence. Interestingly, I was led to Matthew 25:29.
"Use wisely what you've been given and you will be given more."
Wow, is that true about a lot of things. I encourage you to read the whole
parable starting with verse 14. If you have any questions, please don't be
afraid to ask. If I can't answer, we have a lot of wise folks on this distro,
someone will help.
Blessings to all...I'm back to the hospital,
Connie
Day Sixty-five...
August 7, 2003
On July 17th, I sent the following:
"Last Wednesday, he attempted to pick up 9, 1/4" dowels and place them into
holes in a little block. He couldn't do it at all. Today he picked them all up
and placed them in the block and then removed them all. It took 6 minutes and
44 seconds. It will be fun to see how he does the next time he's timed."
Well, today he was timed again. He did it in 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Quite
an improvement!
He also tried it with his left hand. It took 20 minutes to get the pegs into
the holes. He couldn't get them out. Something else to shoot for.
Yesterday Greg spent some time with the wheelchair rep specifying what he needs
in a power chair. Today, Chris (PT) said that he estimates the cost to be
$26,000.00. Please pray that the insurance will pay for it. He will also need
a manual chair, but will have to pay for that himself.
Greg is hoping to come home again on Saturday and Sunday.
Talk to you tomorrow.
Blessings,
Connie

Days Sixty-six and Sixty-seven...
August 8 & 9, 2003
Hi All....
Just a quick note about the last two days. Greg is at home today. As we
speak, Tom is stretching Greg's legs. His muscles get very tight and knot up,
thereby inhibiting them from releasing lactic acid and causing pain. So, we
frequently massage and stretch to give him some relief.
Yesterday Greg made a sandwich in OT. Bread, ham, lettuce and he even cut
the tomato. He used a special knife that was attached to a band that fit around
his hand. Pretty interesting to watch.
Tomorrow he'll be back for church.
Note from Heather: For those who have had difficulty leaving a message on
the map on the website. There is now a tutorial to show you how to do it. Just
click at the appropriate place on the website. Also, there's other new
information there. Check it out!
Blessings,
Connie
Days Sixty-eight & Sixty-nine...
August 10 & 11, 2003
Hi All....
Some news today. Greg said that Dr. Brenes was in this morning and went
through the normal routine: wiggle the toes on your right foot,
nothing...wiggle the toes on your left foot, less than nothing...squeeze your
right knee in...a movement. Then Greg did it for me. It is small movement.
Apparently it is coming from his hip adductors (?) But definitely movement.
Praise God !!!
It appears that the release date is still on target for August 28th.
Friends from church and neighbors are furiously working on the downstairs
temporary renovation. What a blessing !!!
Blessings,
Connie
Day Seventy...
August 12, 2003
Day Seventy. Can you believe it? 10 weeks at Harmarville. Amazing.
Tonight was a special occasion for us. We all got to go see the Pirate game
...from a luxury box. Talk about being spoiled. It was a great set up for us.
More tomorrow
