A New Beginning - March
March
March 11, 2004
Good morning everyone,
Tomorrow Greg will undergo surgery to fuse C6 and C7. You will recall that as a result of the
accident on May 28, 2003, he had a burst fracture of the C5 vertebrae. The next day he had
surgery to fuse C4, 5 and 6 using his bone, cadaver bone and I don't remember what else.
Titanium plates were also put in there. In the last several months it has become apparent
that a space has developed between C6 and 7, causing the spinal column in the neck area to
appear S shaped...or as he calls it...flamingo neck. Hence the surgery.
He will call after 3 PM today to find out what time he will have the surgery.
I'll send along another note when I know for sure.
He met with 2 neurosurgeons. Both say that he should not notice any limitation of movement
in his neck as a result of this new fusion. Furthermore, there is no real risk of the next
vertebrae collapsing as well, He has been told that he will need to wear the collar for 3
months after the surgery. Dr. Flannigan will determine if he (Greg) needs to be an
inpatient at Harmarville afterward.
And so, the journey continues,
Blessings,
Connie

Hello All...
Well...as you know, Greg came home yesterday after having another fusion done on Friday.
He has a lot of neck pain that radiates down his shoulders and arms. He said he had
forgotten about all that pain. On top of that, this morning, when Francie was
getting him up, he started bleeding from the incision. Friend (and nurse) Hope Moser
came over and Francie called Dr. Flanigan. Neither seemed to think that the bleeding
itself was a serious concern. Still, it requires constant observation. We'll keep you posted.
Blessings,
Connie
